The Canadian Long Gun Registry epitomizes everything that is wrong with the entire system of Federal Governments.
While there are countless arguments on both sides for and against the Long Gun Registry, perhaps the most important two in opposition to it are:
1. That the idea was fundamentally based on government misleading to the people (lies)
2. That the implementation of it shows a flagrant disregard for the cost it imposed on the people (theft).
If these two principles are applied to ANYTHING, be it guns, health care, or finances it SHOULD be enough to get anyone's blood boiling.
In my mind, another example of a policy that was based entirely on these two principles that gets my blood boiling was the policy of the Mulroney and Chretien governments to sell of Canada's gold reserves in the 1990's.
Today, Canada's gold reserves sit at about 100,000 ounces (not even one metric tonne). In 1990's those same reserves were approximately 400 tonnes. In contrast, Libya, a country who's government announced they would push for a North African, gold backed currency (shortly before a military coalition overthrew that government) has 150 tonnes of gold. Even Communist China has about 422 tonnes of gold.
Today 400 tonnes of gold at a spot price of (USD) $1700/oz has a value of about $22 billion dollars. Between the time that our criminal Canadian politicians (of both the Conservative and Liberal denomination) sold that gold, the spot price ranged between $300-400/oz. Incidentally, a 20 year LOW in price - the old saying "buy low, sell high" only applies to people or organizations that have an interest in remaining solvent, although technically, you can argue that much of that gold was bought at $35/oz, but I digress.
Let's just use an average price of $350/oz as the sell price, this would place the approximate loss as a result of the Canadian government allowing it's gold reserves to be sold at around $17 billion dollars.
It is my opinion that in the long term, the price of gold has nowhere to go but up. For every $100 the price of gold rises, Canada is down another $1.3 billion. That's $1.3 billion dollars more that every Canadian man, woman and child is on the hook for in lost revenues. Every $100 increase in the price of gold is the cost of one more long more gun registry.
Idiotic neo-cons are of the opinion that "democracy" is an important right. They incorrectly assert that somehow putting an X on a ballot creates prosperity and freedom. An absurd idea, but not surprising, coming from people who generally believe that sending armed troops to occupy foreign countries also somehow creates peace and stability.
These people are worse in my mind, than progressives who think the notion of prosperity and freedom are quaint, antiquated ideas but who also believe in the absurd notion that voting is an acceptable mean to bring about change.
Real change, prosperity and freedom are created by voting with your money and voting with your mind.
The ballot box is a slaves suggestion box to give slaves the illusion that they can pick the best thief and liar. Worse, it's a system that empowers and legitimises those same thieves and liars to steal and lie more than they already do.

I work in an office filled with aging baby boomer who prattle on all day about their democratic rights. They apply that label to everything from health care to an indexed pension. They truly are slaves.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, whatever happened to that 150 tons of Libyan gold?
I don't know, buy my guess is it will be liberated shortly in exchange of a large reserve of US dollars.
